DZA fotuses enthusiasm with astro lecture at Zittau Children's Academy

At the Children's Academy in Zittau, 198 third and fourth graders are immersed in the secrets of the universe. Christian Stegmann took the young listeners on a journey from our solar system to the collision of black holes

Astroparticle physicist Stegmann showed how gravitational waves shake space. With impressive images and vivid explanations, he let the fascination of astrophysics become tangible - a lecture that elicited exciting questions for children: "How is a black hole created?", "Isn't the universe a big black hole?", "What happens when two stars collide?".

Not all questions can be answered now. But perhaps today's questions lead to tomorrow's motivation. We hope children devote themselves to astrophysics, data science or technology development as these fields are branches of DZA's focus. We also want to get a little closer to the answers.

The head of the Children's Academy, Frank Schneider, about the evening in Zittau: "Astrophysics, which raises essential questions for basic research and provides important answers and also fascinates very much, shows in particular that science inspires." The children's academy in Zittau is unilingual, its counterpart in Görlitz takes place bilingually in German and Polish and is aimed at children from both countries. The academy programs are organised by the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Görlitz.
