Germany becomes member of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory

Another milestone has been reached - for Germany and especially for the DZA in Lusatia: Germany has been a member of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO for short) since 1 November 2024.
This opens up new opportunities for German researchers in the field of radio astronomy. This is because they are now involved in setting up and utilising the world's largest radio telescope network in South Africa and Australia. The telescopes will record and process data from the universe, the volume of which exceeds the size of today's internet. This requires the development of new sensors and completely new computing methods that promise applications far beyond astrophysics.
And we at the DZA are involved! In future, the data will be bundled and processed at one of our supercomputer facilities. This is only possible in close cooperation with excellent partners from science and industry such as the Max Planck Society, OHB Digital Connect GmbH, and, of course, the SKAO.
That's why we're really looking forward to hosting next year's SKAO Science Conference in Görlitz in June 2025.
Therefore: Save the date: 16 - 20 June 2025
